What’s the single most attention-grabbing communication technique? It’s the very strategy that got Joel promoted to prime time on KABC Los Angeles – the #1 radio market on planet earth.

Here it is…

Myth-busting.

Myth-busting is taking an idea that’s conventionally believed and turning it on its ear.

For example…

Many serious cyclists believe e-bikes (electric bikes) are for people who don’t have the juice to pedal on their own. The truth is, studies show e-bike riders get even more exercise than conventional cyclists!

Here’s another one.

Most people assume that the aging or chronically ill family members they care for at home will die before they do. The truth is, 1/3 of home care providers die before the person they are caring for!

Myth-busts seize our attention. The more shocking and unexpected the “truth,” the more powerful this is. You can use this technique in headlines, podcast ideas, openings of talks or interviews, slide presentations, even jury trials!

Just find a myth — something in your field that is widely believed but isn’t true. (Make sure it IS believed by all or most people.)

Then explode the myth.

And if you want to know how to make this even more dramatic…. stay tuned for a future blog.
